Spring OOTD

Today, Canada is experiencing Spring. By Spring I mean that whole "April Showers brings May Flowers" business. Yesterday it was summer, today it is spring, mother nature hasn't gotten the memo about what the end of May is supposed to feel like.

Needless to say, there are some staples that remain in my closet for this very occurrence. Such staples include my Hunters found online Here. I love these boots, in the winter I use them as winter boots (seeing as how they are water proof- and it snows a lot...) and a cute Rain Coat. My beloved Nana picked me up a cute plaid, peacoat style rain coat. I tried so hard to get a picture of me wearing it, but I was by myself, it had started raining, so that didn't pan out.

I originally had planned on wearing just a white shirt, with black jeggings and my new vans, however.. it rained. So instead I wore this:

Shirt: Urban Planet
Pants: Maurices
Shoes: Hunter Original Rainboots

Accessories: Urban Behaviour

OOTD: Wednesday

Bonus Post! Again I really liked my outfit today! I went shopping last week with a friend of mine from university and waited patiently to wear some of the items until I had a day I felt I couldn't wait any longer.. Prolonging the newness. I really like the aqua-minty colour, and the cardigan with daisies is great! (They are my favourite flower!)

Spring Clothing Haul

My recent lack of busy-ness has left me with a lot of free time, free time I occasionally spend shopping. Spring has finally come to Canada, although it feels like it will only last a week or two before it is summer and too humid to breathe. The change in seasons has given me the opportunity to ditch the chunky sweaters of winter and embrace the pastels of spring. Spring (and fall) is truly the only time where I live that true fashion can shine. Summer is too hot for anything other than shorts, tank tops and top knots.. and winter, well winter requires a parka.

So shopping, yeah I've been doing that. Stitches is this great Canadian clothing store owned by a parent company who owns many other stores under their brand, they carry similar styles but never the same designs, the price remains as great and the quality amazes me. I went to an outlet store a couple days ago and picked up some spring/summer must-haves. The beauty of Canadian springs is they are typically warm enough to start wearing shorts. They were having a sale, on top of their awesome deals. I grabbed 2 tank tops (that I didn't get pictures of) for $9 total (6 for one and 3 for the other).

On top of that epic deal, I picked up 2 pairs of their shorts- a hunter green colour and a coral. Each pair were between $10-$12. Again, a steal. I think I am most excited for the coral ones, but the green are super cute too.

For some reason, they show up a lot more pink then they should- which bothers me. I LOVE the lace detailing on the bottom of the shorts, I think it adds just the right amount of detailing for a pair of shorts- and they came with the belt, which is beige and really just rounds out the shorts.

I'm really excited about these too- shorts are like required for summer, completely. I like that they aren't denim, so something different can be done with them, dressing them up is a definite option.

I love sheer tops, paired with a tank top it's dressy and casual all at the same time. I like that this one is a sleveless top, with a collar and button down makes it a little more dressy. It has navy blue and cream colouring which is still light enough for summer. This was $12, a great price I think.

Giant Tiger is another great Canadian company. It offers reasonably priced clothing as well as household needs and minor groceries- it's like a mini Walmart. I love this store- I've been shopping at it for as long as I can remember.

I got these awesome light coral-peachy coloured capris for $25! They came with a matching belt and I absolutely adore them. They are a perfect contrast compared to my love of mint and are the same tone as my mint pants. I think they are great for cooler summer nights or spring- like right now. :)

The last thing I got was this over the shoulder bag. It's has gold hardware and the chain is detachable, which is awesome for nights out if I want to make it a clutch not just an over the shoulder bag. You will not believe the price- $8. Such a deal, and considering it was originally $10, even if it wasn't on sale it would still be a steal.

That's all the shopping I've done- so far. What are some of your favourite spring/summer clothes?

Tag Week: The Fashion Tag!

I found this tag by again, typing into google "Fashion Tags" This one I found on fashi0nrealist.blogspot.ca and I thought it would be another great fashion tag to round out Tag Week.

1. How would you describe your style?
This question actually stumped me. I guess I would describe my style as uniquely mine? I like a lot of different things, and wear a number of different styles in a week. So maybe just drifting? Always changing?
2. What are your wardrobe staples?
My wardrobe staples are leggings, jeggings, cardigans, chiffon shirts and tank tops.
3. What is the most expensive item in your closet?
My lululemon limited edition sweater. The pattern on it is beautiful and I cannot ever part with it.

4. Who is your favourite designer?
Victoria Beckham. Her style is just so classy, I love absolutely all of her designs.

5. What is your favourite store?
Stitches. Canada has this chain of stores that operate under a parent company that also carry the same brands and styles for other stores under their umbrella. Stitches, Urban Planet and a couple others carry StreetWear Society, which has different designs depending on the store you go to. The quality of their clothes is fantastic and the price is amazing. It is possible to go into a store and spend $100 and get numerous outfits, or even staple items. I almost exclusively shop there.

6. Who is your "fashion role model"?
Emma Watson and Kate Middleton. Emma's style is always evolving, and I love everything she wears. Kate Middleton is just so elegant and put together, and I love that she re-wears things, and alters things to suit her. Both of their styles are the perfect mix of class and trendy.

7. What is your favourite way to style your hair?
I have naturally curly hair, so I love straightening, or curling with a curling wand or straightener.
8. What is your go-to slash emergency outfit?
Black leggings, Oversized shirt, Kimono style cardigan, hair in a top knot and booties. Looks put together enough to pass, but not so much work that you have to think about it.
9. What trend would you like most to come back and stay?
GAH, I have no idea, I don't really follow trends, I go to a store and pick what I like.. I guess layering with tank tops and shirts. That trend should never ever die, I wear it too much. Like tanks under shirts, all the time?
10. What do you always have on?
Tank tops. I'm large chested, and tank tops have become a security blanket for me. I wear them under LITERALLY everything. It prevents shirts from stretching or sagging around my chest, and provides more length, as most shirts loose a bit on me.

11. What is your most prized possession in your closet?
My Blue Suede Shoes. I got them from walmart and they were not expensive by any means, but they have a bit of sentimental meaning to them. My grandpa (I call him poppy) loves Elvis and that type of music and we were joking one time about him and I getting matching blue suede shoes, and then I was at walmart and saw these heels and I had to buy them, and now I cannot part with them.

12. Who influenced you to start writing about fashion?
Niomi Smart, Tanya Burr and Zoella. All three of these ladies have such impecible style and their blogs are my favourites. From the moment I discovered their blogs I knew I wanted to start writing as well.
13. What is your favourite fabric?
Chiffon. It's breathable, especially for the summer time. It flows well enough from my body that I'm not self conscious wearing shirts made out of it. I think it's a really forgiving fabric that especially in high-low (I call them mullet) skirts and dresses it looks classy and understated all at once.
14. Who is your favourite model?
I do not follow fashion enough to know models and all that jazz, I do love Miranda Kerr, she's gorgeous and her style is fantastic.

15. What would you spend $1000 on?
Christian Louboutins hands down. No thinking required. Once I'm all done school and have a career I plan on buying at least a pair.

16. Is fashion in your blood?
Not particularly. My mom and sister love shopping and dressing up, and since I was a young girl I've always cared about how I dressed. As a kid I refused to wear pants (so I'm told). I loved dressing up, and still do!

Tag Week: Closet Confidential

For today's Tag Week I picked the Closet Confidential Tag! This tag was created by FleurDeForce on her youtube channel.

1. what is the oldest item in your closet?
The oldest item in my closet would be this limited edition sweater from lululemon. I got it because I had achieved the honour roll average my parents pushed for (in highschool I was ALWAYS like 1 or 2 percent off, so they told me if I got the average they would buy me anything I wanted from lululemon). Lululemon is this high end activewear company that originates in Vancouver Canada. Their clothes are slightly expensive, but the quality is unreal. The pair of pants I bought 7 years ago are still going strong! I absolutely adore the pattern, and I don't think I will ever get rid of it.

2. what is the newest item in your closet?
The newest item is this dress from Modcloth that I literally got in the mail on friday (when this post should have gone up.. oops!). I got this dress for my upcoming University Convocation, and the pattern on the bottom half of the dress is so springy- and so classy. The style of the dress itself is perfect for the occasion, and I literally spent days scouring the internet for the perfect dress. It fits perfectly (the reviews section on any item is so handy for picking sizes etc.) I was really nervous about ordering online because I am quite large chested and dresses always make me look funny, or either too tight in certain areas and baggy in others. It fits like a glove and I CANNOT wait to wear it for Graduation!

3. what is the most expensive item in your closet?
The most expensive item in my closet is the same lululemon sweater. They retail for $100, and are so worth it!
4. what is the cheapest/ most affordable item?
The cheapest most affordable item in my closet is this highlighter pink sheer top I got from Bootlegger for their nothing over 10 dollars sale. So I believe it was around the 10 dollar mark but not more than that. This is the most affordable item in my closet.

5. what was the biggest bargain?
The biggest bargain I can think of are these tank tops from Stitches, I got two of them recently for $9 for both. Many of their tank tops are around $5-10 and the quality of them is really great.

6. what was the biggest waste of money?
The biggest waste of money.. hmm, I don't think I have one. Nope, I don't. I recently moved and did a large purge of all of my clothes and stuff, and got rid of anything that I didn't like of was a big waste of money by donating it. Anything and everything in my closet is exactly worth every nickel (Canada doesn't have pennies).
bonus: show us your three favourite items right now
My Three Favourite Items are:
1. Mint green blazer. I got the blazer from Stitches for $25, and I love pairing it with black jeggings and a grey shirt.

2. Stitches Kimono cardigan- by far one of the best $20 purchases I have ever made, and probably the best purchase from my beloved Stitches. It's this wonderful kimono style sweater with adorable button details on the side, the pattern is very on trend, and it works for all year round, depending on the shirt under neath and the outfit.

3. Vancouver Canucks Sweater- My parents currently live in Vancouver, and it's the first time we have lived near an NHL team, this sweater is a mens XL and it's great for sitting around the house, I definitely wore this writing my final papers, curled up in hermit mode, power writing.

Well, that's it for this Tag, check back for the next one in Tag Week!

Tag Week: Beauty Blogger Tag!

I was scrolling google looking for some tags or something so you could get to know me better. I thought I would do a whole week of Tags that are popular on the internet, or had been. A simple google search of "Beauty Blogger Tags" and I found this one, originally on Beauty Broadcast blog by Emily! This tag is a little old, I believe Emily posted it just over a year ago. But anyways here it goes:

1. Is your hair naturally curly or straight?
My hair is naturally curly, frizzy and thick. When I was really young it was very blonde and very curly. When I was about 12 it would dry into more wavy hair.. (Which right now I would kill for). I got a perm when I was 13 (my mom convinced me!!) and it in some weird way triggered my curls again.. and now 9 years later it is still ridiculously curly..

This is my hair without product and air dried.
2. Do you dye it yourself or go to a salon?
I actually no longer dye my hair. My hair has gone through a lot, I used to dye it new colours (nothing crazy) every 6-8 weeks! My parents would only let me dye my hair on the condition that I went to a salon (they trusted hairstylists more than me) When I went to University my dad told me he was no longer going to support my hair dying habit, and I being a student could not afford the upkeep of touching up my roots every couple of weeks. My hair goes pretty fast so this is almost a requirement. I got my parents to agree to let me dye it once, a dark brown, 1 shade away from black to cover all the hair dye I had in it.. and then once more with highlights closer to my natural hair colour once the coverup faded. And thus my journey to dye free hair began.

3. Do you wear the same style everyday or do you change it?
I usually try to do something different with my hair, since I only wash it a couple of times a week I do get a lot of freedom, especially with the texture and curls in my hair. I typically follow a routine or naturally curly, amping up some of the curls with a curling wand and then straight if my hair will allow it. Honestly, most mornings I wake up and decide if my hair curled nice enough while I slept or not and that effects how I do my hair. By 4 o'clock though I can almost guarantee that my hair will be in a ponytail or a topknot.

4. Do you do your own mani/pedi or go to a salon?
Up until about a month ago I worked at Tim Horton's where wearing nail polish was not allowed (you are pouring coffee and making peoples food) so I opted to do my own manis if I was going to paint my nails. It honestly rarely happened, I don't like to waste and painting my nails for 2 days did not seem like a fun time. I paint my own toe nails in the winter and usually in the summer I will get one pedi from a salon just to feel pampered.

5. How often do you change your nail polish?
I like buying nail polish and changing it up once a week or so, and if I am going to spend the money on something professional I will wear it until it's a chipped mess. Because of my previous job, like I answered in the last question, I wasn't able to wear a lot of nail polish, but now that I'm unemployed.. (only upside is nail polish wearing!!) I'm changing my nails at least once a week.

6. Do you polish your toes in the winter or just the summer?
I paint my toes year round. I really hate socks, even in the winter, they constrict my toes and it weirds me out, so in the winter I love having a pop of colour in the winter. In the summer obviously flip flops look great with your nails painted.. so I have to do it then too.

7. How long does it take for you to put on makeup?
To do a complete, everyday style makeup look I can get my whole face done in under 20 minutes (4am wake ups for Tim Horton's really helped me perfect it). If I'm doing my makeup for a special occasion it takes me closer to half an hour probably. I put a lot of consideration into my makeup if it is for a special occasion and I will probably have it already figured it out and tried it out once or twice. That really eliminates the hassle and the trial and error on the day of.

8. What do you do first face or eyes?
If I am working with pigments of colours that I know have a lot of fall out I will start with my eyes. If I am just getting ready and using something simple, like my Naked Palette I start with my face for a nice even canvas, as well as being able to more accurately set up my under eyes and around my eyes for eyeshadow.

9. Do you collect makeup or just buy what you need?
Collecting makeup is something I enjoy, but I typically start off a shopping trip buying what I need. I keep a list in my phone of things I need a backup of, or something I am running out of. Under that list I keep my wishlist. I buy things off my wishlist if I am shopping and it is on sale or if I am feeling like a pick me up or something. Usually I buy what I need, I could try to justify needing everything in my collection if I really had too.
Here is just the beginning to my list/wishlist
10.How often do you wear false eyelashes?
I never really wear false eyelashes. I'm scared of them actually. When I was skating I had to wear some for one show that I did and they didn't fit properly and were waaay too long, since then I've almost been traumatized. I guess I always just thought that false eyelashes were supposed to look fake, or that since I prefer a more natural look they would just look too obviously fake on me. Until very recently I didn't even own false eyelashes, I bought a pair of the Katy Perry ones in Sweetie Pie. They are a more natural look and I'm excited to try them.

11. Do you do a full face of makeup everyday?
No way. Most days at the very least I am wearing some BB cream and concealer. I don't typically wear foundation on a regular basis because of my freckles, I fear looking too coated in makeup, even with the lightest coverage of foundation my freckles look lighter. I prefer lighter casual makeup that looks natural compared to a full face, but that is just a personal preference.
This is a typical makeup day for me

12. Do you wear makeup when you're home alone or with your family?
It depends on the occasion. If I am home with family just hanging out or have a day where I'm not going anywhere I won't put makeup on. Usually I'm in a routine now to wake up and put a little on just incase I decide to go somewhere. If I have family coming over for a dinner or a family event yes I wear makeup, but only a little bit.

13. Will you leave the house without makeup?
Absolutely. I like to give my skin a break and let it breathe, so I usually have a day or two of the week where I don't generally use anything. I am a little self conscious of how plain my eyes look without at least mascara on (I am very fair, and my eyelashes are quite blonde). But I still am okay with leaving the house 100% makeup free.

14. How many high-end products do you have?
I have not counted just how many high-end products I have in my collection. The majority of my high-end products have been gifts from family for my birthday or christmas. I'm all about the best deal, and if I can find something of similar quality for a cheaper price I will buy that typically. I have purchased myself a MAC quad and MAC Viva Glam V lipstick. I can easily say that the majority of my collection is drugstore not high-end.

15. Do you plan your OOTD every night or decide when you're getting dressed?
I love dressing to how I feel. When my alarm goes off in the morning, I stay in bed until the nearest 5 or 10 number (it's this weird thing I have with time) and consider what I should wear for the day. If I wake up one morning feeling bubbly and more colourful then I would obviously gravitate to something more colourful or bubbly. If I am sick, I stick to yoga pants or leggings and a casual  sweater. I also consider what I will be doing for the day, going to work for the school when I did required more professional attire, if I was working both jobs I needed to consider walking to my other job, if I'm going shopping I need something comfy and casual and also easy to take on and off etc. If it is for a special occasion it is picked out days (most likely weeks) in advance.

16. How often do you change your handbag?
I've been using the same one since Christmas.. Is that an answer? I like neutral bags that look good with anything. In the summer, if I am going out or something, or it is really hot out I opt for a cross-body bag, but throw whatever I need from my purse into that and then take it out.

17. What time do you wake up or go to sleep?
When I'm in school I stick to a general routine of 10-11 bedtime and 6-7 wake up. This does change depending on if I have a lot of assignments to do, if I am working or if I have something else to do during the morning etc. Since I am on summer holidays, and in-between programs I stay up until closer to midnight and wake up around 8-10.

18. How often or when do you workout?
As of tomorrow, I will be following Blogilates Beginner Workout Calendar which will have me be working out I think 6 days a week. I plan on working out in the morning, right when I wakeup so that once I am done I feel productive, as well, I can get ready for the day without worrying about sweating or procrastinating later.

19. Left handed or Right handed?
I am right handed and completely useless with my left hand.

20. How tall are you?
I am 5'7.5" (that .5 really matters!!)

21. Do you speak any foreign languages?
In Canada, English and French are both official languages. I am obviously fluent in English, I used to be fluent in French as well, as I got older I lost my proficiency in French. I still understand it really well, I just have more difficulty translating from English to French really quick. So to the rest of the world, I guess I speak a foreign language, but here I am bilingual in both official languages. (In other words, someone else make this decision for me!?)

22. How many pets do you have?
I currently live with my grandparents who have 1 dog named Brandy. So I say she is my pet by association.

23. How often are you on blogger?
Since I just started this blog, and have been working on setting it up I am on it just about every day right now. As I get it started I hope to be posting fairly regularly.

24. Do you read comments on other blogs?
Absolutely. A blogger can post their views on a product, but the comments are where the actual discussion takes place. I love seeing other peoples thoughts on a product I am considering trying, or a product I am not sure of that I already own. The comments section on blogs is gold for this perfect type of community, where other ways to apply a product etc can be shared.

25. Do you keep a list of products to try as you see other posts?
I try too. If I'm scrolling through blogs and see reviews on something I was interested in, where the blogger says that the product was not the best for them but maybe more like my skin type etc. I keep note of them. Also if it is a higher end product and they give it a really good review I for sure keep it in mind.

26. How did you come up with your blog name?
Originally my blog name was mikaylaaas which is my username for a lot of my social media accounts. I didn't like it for a blog name for some reason and spent a lot of time thinking of a new one. Finally I settled on a variation of "Southern Bell" but because Canada is a northern country I wanted northernbelle (belle in french means beauty or pretty) but that was taken. So I thought of synonyms for belle, that translated to pretty in french and joli was one of them. And with that Northern Joli was born.

27. What kind of camera do you use for your photographs?
I use the Cannon Elph HS 300, it's blue.  I like it, it takes good quality photos for what I currently need. I also use my iPhone 4 to take pictures and usually edit them on iPhoto on my MacBook Pro.

28. How often do you clean your house?
My grandparents have their own routine for cleaning their house. Most things are done daily, I sweep every couple of days, but common things like dishes are done every day. I tidy my bedroom every day, I can't be productive if I have a messy room. The beauty space my sister and I are creating in the basement will also be a tidy-every-day thing. We clean the bathroom we share once a week.

29. What's your favourite colour?
Surprisingly Purple. My bedroom is blue, grey and red. I used to own a lot of Pink, but purple has always had my heart.

30. Do you swear?
Not often.

31. What are you doing with the rest of your day?
It's Game of Thrones night! I'm watching GOT and then I will probably fold my laundry, watch some Gossip Girl on Netflix and find a tag for tomorrow.

Minty Green

If anyone knows me at all they know I love anything mint. Chocolate, candies, lipgloss, the colour I LOVE IT ALL! So when I was shopping last week and I stumbled across this lovely mint green blazer there wasn't a question I was buying it.

Since Spring isn't completely making it's presence known yet in Ontario where I live, my wardrobe is in the uncertain state, torn between winter and spring. Today, it was a little warmer than it has been, so I pulled out my mint blazer to wear to my office job. I paired it with grey leggings and black booties (which are now covered in mud :(,) I added this gold necklace with a cross on it to tie it together, and I love the look.
Blazer: StreetWear Society, Tank: Garage Necklace: Urban Planet

For my makeup I broke out the Inglot Freedom System my mom and sister got me when they were in New York City last summer. I had never really found the perfect time to use the colours because to me they scream spring and summer, and I didn't actually get it until August. So this morning I thought perfect, a great time to bust it out and have some fun.

I wanted to keep it simple, because of the look I was going for, so I used my maybelline Colour Tattoo in Barely Branded as a base and then used the light shade all over my lid with my sigma E55 brush. I took the orangey sunset kind of shade in my crease and I used the E.L.F Essential Blending Eye Brush (I cannot believe it was only a dollar!) and then this micabeauty blending brush to soften out any harsh lines. I got the brush in my ipsy bag two months ago. I then took the minty green colour and used it under my eyes, taking the sigma E65 brush and gradually went along the colours the further away from my inner corner.

On my lips I'm wearing MAC's Viva Glam V. For me it's almost this perfect "you're lips but better" colour and for some reason I am obsessed with the scent of it.

What colour makes you scream spring?

Hello! Bonjour! Hola!

Hi!

My name is Mikayla, I'm  21 (almost 22!) years old. I'm in my final weeks of university and absolutely crazy about all things fashion and beauty related. I live in Canada, a lovely country covered in snow about 8 months of the year. For the past four years my life has revolved around a lot of stereotypical Canadian things, I'm in school for a Bachelor of Arts in History and Canadian Studies (yes, I have studied my own country for 4 years) and working at one of my many local Tim Hortons. For those of you who don't know, Tim Hortons is to Canada what Starbucks is to the rest of the world. Next year, I embark on a one year college program to study Human Resources Management, and want a job in Toronto!

I decided to start this blog because I have spent countless hours on the internet reading blogs and watching videos about makeup, beauty, fashion and more and want to have a place to write about some of my favourite things. I've always been a girl who loved to dress up, go shopping and try on new things, the same applies to my love of makeup. I am always on the look for something new, and being a student, affordable. I've actively been wearing makeup for the last 10 years of my life, I competitively Figure Skated (which required dramatic makeup to be visible on the ice).

Lately, my life has been consumed with university, two jobs, and a social life. One of my best friends is my biggest makeup pal, we go shopping at our Shopper's Drug Mart (like a CVS or Walgreens) a couple times a week, and the girls know us by name! I'm hoping this blog is a way for me to transition from all of the things that keep me busy, to being unemployed and graduated (haha!)

I guess, Hello, welcome to my blog, and I hope you want to read it! because I really want to write it!

xo, Mikaylaaas

ps. if you want to see my face, this is me!
